Thirty years ago, in December 1991, a country called the USSR, with a population of nearly 300 million, left the political geography of the world and was replaced by 15 countries. With this event, a great earthquake occurred in the geopolitical arena of the world, the aftershocks of which can still be felt.

Fall of a giant
Generations reminiscent of the Soviet era in international relations chess have not forgotten the power and appeal of this superpower and its ability to influence the five continents.

Founded by Lenin under the October Revolution of 1917, the military raised the sickle and hammer flag over the tall Reichstag building in Hitler’s ousted German capital in 1945, and at the head of one of the two powers in the decades after World War II. The political-military superiority on the planet has infiltrated hundreds of millions of people, not only with nuclear warheads and intercontinental ballistic missiles, but also with a fascinating and mobilizing ideology, even in the most glorious centers of global liberalism.

But for younger generations, the Soviet Union is the only name left of an extinct empire, followed by a long list of other extinct empires in history, the most recent of which were called Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire in the 20th century.

Let us not forget that the history of the cemetery is of empires and systems, many of which dreamed of immortality. The Soviet Union was also hard-line for much of the twentieth century, and there were many prominent intellectuals who saw it as the future of humanity.

Thirty years after the fall of this superpower, we must be more cautious about the ability of the greats of the intellectual world of our time to prophesy.

Dozens of think tanks around the world, with researchers whose only field of study was "Soviet studies," monitored even the smallest developments in what he called the "Invincible Fortress of the Workers." However, none of these experts could have predicted the collapse of this gigantic power, even at such a rapid pace, although some later claimed to have made this prediction.

Thirty years after this astonishing event, with so much data at its disposal, it is not the collapse of the Soviet Union that is most surprising, but its duration over a period of 74 years. The main question is: how could a political system, with all its inherent weaknesses, and the continual collapse of its founders’ ideals and claims, have survived more than seven decades despite very difficult trials and, more importantly, hundreds of millions? Convince the world that it has achieved brilliant success in building an earthly paradise?
